Via Zoom

About the workshop: This approachable online zine-making workshop will touch upon important historical aspects of zine culture and introduce participants to the power of telling their own stories through the vessel of the zine. Aimed at beginners with an interest in art and image-making and a desire to create their own self-published works, through discussion and exercises we will explore the creative practice of zine-making whilst encouraging improvisation and play. This session will focus on utilizing the free mobile web tool SHRIMP ZINE, considering its use as a digital access point to zine-making, encouraging users to think strategically about their images and photo albums living on their mobile devices and in the cloud.

Requirements: (Level of experience): Beginners but really anyone and any level! They should also have a touchscreen device (iPhone, iPad) accessible that is not the same device they are Zooming on, if possible! Also, a few sheets of 8 1/2" x 11" paper would be handy too so everyone can think about the paper as a material and get a feel for some of the things I will be discussing.

SHRIMP ZINE is a progressive web app developed to help digital natives to make zines for free on their smartphones. This is intended to be a communal creative tool that takes images that live in the digital sphere and help those using the app to merge them into an object that can be printed out, shared, and exchanged. Intended to promote the art of zine-making and explore the possibilities of the digital and the physical coming into contact with one another, as well as engaging in public discourse and world-building using the vessel of the zine and printed material as a catalyst to do this work. SHRIMP ZINE exists to consider how to build bridges between people and to break down walls to allow for new and exciting forms of tangibility.

Andreas Laszlo Konrath is a London Guildhall University graduate with a BA Hons in Fine Art. Andreas is a photographer and a zine and artist-book maker, citing community building, independent dialogue, exchange, and collaboration as a key inspiration and motivator. The zines and books that Andreas has published have been archived in collections at the ICP Triennial, MoMA Library, The Getty Research Institute, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Library & The Yale University Library. Andreas contributes as a visiting artist to institutions like FIT, ICP, Pratt Institute, Red Hook Labs, SVA & The New School, and is the co-founder of SHRIMP ZINE. Andreas is currently an artist educator at the museum Dia:Beacon.
