Computer lab manager
Reports to: Community Outreach Manager & Teaching Artist Coordinator
Time: 12 hours/week (9 hours in the lab, 3 hours of admin work); Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 3-6pm
POWRPLNT is a Bushwick-based community computer lab and plant-filled gallery space focused on digital art education, with a focus on youth. We host workshops, art shows, artist talks, and are open as a computer lab during the day. We advocate that technology is a right, not a privilege.
About the Position
The Computer Lab Manager’s primary responsibility is to ensure POWRPLNT is open consistently while supporting a creative, safe and productive atmosphere for youth and the community. The ideal candidate is passionate about youth development, technology access, and art. The role is very much about being helpful, engaging and supportive to our guests who are mostly middle school and high school students. The Computer Lab Manager will be expected to physically open the space, and make sure our Lab has the office and tech supplies it needs as well as coordinate repairs when necessary.
Youth & Guest Engagement
Create a youth friendly environment by welcoming youth, answering questions and pointing them to resources.
Supervise the lab and promote a positive atmosphere while guests use our computers.
Remind youth and other guests about our Code of Conduct.
Initiate conversation with guests and helpful with any computer issues that arise.
Ensure our guests sign in and follow computer waitlist procedure.
Share information about our classes, teaching artist program, and encourage visitors to sign up for our mailing list.
Sell merchandise, memberships, and printing services.
Tend to regular duties like checking for packages and watering plants.
Identify and develop opportunities to expand the depth and breadth of existing computer lab offerings.
Ensure we have adequate and functional tech and office supplies for programming, computer lab and our dear pet Leon the Bearded Dragon.
Print more space materials (logs, sign in sheets, handouts, signage etc.) when necessary.
Conduct regular computer updates.
Stay aware of the spaces functionality, coordinate repairs and installations when necessary.
Maintain awareness of space cleanliness, organization and ensure positive presentation of POWRPLNTt’s facilities.
Oversee the space layout and arrangement.
This role will develop skills in the area of Volunteer Management:
Interview and train volunteers to provide extra support in the lab.
Develop onboarding materials and guides for lab volunteers.
Conduct background checks on prospective volunteers.
Passion for working with youth.
1-2 years working in education or youth development.
Strong youth leadership skills.
Computer savvy and can troubleshoot small technical issues that might arise during common computer tasks like printing and scanning.
Excellent communicator and ability to develop rapport with our guests.
A big plus if knowledgeable about digital art software like Adobe Suite and Ableton Live.
Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Must be reliable and punctual.
